Mrs. Mel Charlton-Smith, Chemical Hygiene Officer, Chemistry Lab Coordinator and Lecturer in the Chemistry Department, holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry from West Virginia Wesleyan College and has completed 18 hours of graduate study at Marshall University. Mrs. Charlton-Smith has taught at Wesleyan for eleven years in the Chemistry Department and has been teaching on the collegiate level since 1992. In 1997 Mrs. Charlton-Smith became involved in Lab Safety. She has promoted and implemented lab and chemical safety programs that follow the OSHA Lab Standard since 1998. At West Virginia Wesleyan College she developed the first Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Hygiene & Safety which is now a standing program offered only at West Virginia Wesleyan College. For the BS-CHS program Mrs. Charlton-Smith teaches Survey of IH/HAZWOPER, CHO-Experiential Learning and CHO: Preparation for the Profession. For the Chemistry department, Mrs. Charlton-Smith teaches Lab Safety Management, Chemistry for the Health Sciences and various lab courses as needed. Her responsibilities as Chemical Hygiene Officer cover both overseeing the implementation of the OSHA lab standard within the School of Sciences, but also chemical management and chemical waste handling. Her research centers on developing low cost, effective hazardous chemical characterization testing for laboratories with limited funding. Mrs. Charlton-Smith is of Cherokee descent and is currently Chief of Appalachian American Indians of WV a Native American organization of over 5,000 members.
